The Meducate health topics API provides access to a structured dataset of medical conditions sourced from the MedlinePlus health topic library. The dataset covers diseases, disorders, syndromes, symptoms, and mental health topics spanning every major area of medicine.
Each health topic in the API includes:
- Name — the canonical topic name
- Description — a structured summary synthesised from authoritative sources
- Type — classification of the topic kind: Disease, Disorder, Syndrome, Symptom, or Mental Health
- ICD-10 category — the ICD-10 chapter the topic belongs to (e.g. Respiratory System, Mental & Behavioral, Circulatory System)
Topic Types Covered
Diseases, Disorders & Syndromes
The largest group. Covers chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, asthma), acute diseases (pneumonia, appendicitis), infectious diseases (influenza, HIV), functional disorders, named syndromes, and rare conditions. Each is classified by ICD-10 body system or condition category.
Mental Health
Mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other psychological and behavioural disorders. Classified under the Mental & Behavioral ICD-10 category.
Symptoms
Common patient-reported symptoms classified by body system. Useful as input for symptom checker logic or triage flow classification.

Data Sources
Health topic data is sourced from:
- MedlinePlus — U.S. National Library of Medicine, the primary source for topic discovery. Medical conditions sourced from MedlinePlus are discovered automatically and retired when removed from MedlinePlus.
- PubMed — peer-reviewed biomedical literature from the NLM. Used to enrich topics with additional research context.
